Southwest Utah: Part One

Zion National Park

Zion National Park: I’m kinda bummed I have no plans this Labor Day weekend, and I’m finding myself reminiscing about one of my favorite getaways from last year around this time. Zion had never even entered my radar until my boyfriend announced it was on his bucket list. So off we went for a long weekend.

Excited to miss the summer heat and big crowds, we flew to Vegas in October, rented a car and headed out. Instead of staying at a hotel in Springdale (at the South entrance to the park) we made reservations at the more remote Zion Mountain Ranch outside of the East entrance.

It rained buckets for two days straight (I won’t even mention the near-flat tire on the way up) and we were beginning to question our timing. But, in hindsight, it added a level of coziness to our stay at the Ranch. Which was very cute! Not exactly glamping, but pretty outdoorsy. We stayed in one of the cabin suites, and ate at the rustic—yet high-end—on-site restaurant every morning and night (make reservations—even if it looks empty!).

Zion-hike

A few days into the trip (and after a side excursion to Bryce Canyon) the sun came out and the weather was perfect for hiking! We started at the Canyon Overlook Trail, and about half way up my fear of heights—and edges—took over. I waited while Michael finished the hike (I hear the views were amazing) and we headed for something tamer. We went further into the park, hiked the Emerald Pools, had lunch at the Zion Lodge and meandered around for a bit.

Zion National Park

I never got tired of looking at all the amazing geography and rock formations. It was picture-perfect, and I have to say, probably the most well-maintained park I’ve been to thus far. I can’t wait to go back.

  1. I enjoyed my virtual trip to Zion. Never been there – add that to our bucket list
