Sure, the grand re-opening of the new Bay Bridge is the talk of the town this week, but the Golden Gate is still San Francisco’s most famous landmark. I’ve run and walked past the base of it at Fort Point hundreds of times since I’ve lived here. But it wasn’t until fairly recently that a friend took me up into the Fort where there are lots of exhibits and stair access to the top. I’ve been a few times since, and it’s really cool to get so close to the underbelly of the Bridge, and see the steel framework of the arches from underneath.
If you go, bring a jacket as it’s pretty windy up there, and you’re gonna want to stay for awhile and check out the views—which are just as awe-inspiring as the structure.
